With the involvement of BioControl Jena GmbH, a new paper has been published in microLife (7:uqag012, 2026, DOI). Together with S. Schäuble, D. Albrecht-Eckardt and G. Panagiotou, the unified (pre-)processing platform FungiNetDB was presented.

Jena, September 2026 – BioControl Jena GmbH is celebrating its 30th company anniversary this year. Since its foundation in 1996, the company has been developing data-driven solutions for complex challenges in the life sciences.
BioControl Jena was spun off on 19 September 1996 from the former Hans Knöll Institute for Natural Product Research, today the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology – Hans Knöll Institute. The aim was to make computer-aided analyses available to additional working groups and scientific institutions – a task that could not be implemented to this extent within the institute structures at the time.
Research, clinics, medical technology and regulation today face a common challenge: the available amounts of data are growing, while results must remain traceable and reliable. BioControl Jena combines data analysis, statistics, bioinformatics, mathematical modelling and software development to derive usable insights and robust decision-making bases from complex biological and medical data.
“We build a bridge between complex data and reliable results,” says Managing Director Dominik Driesch. “Together with our partners, we develop solutions that are scientifically sound, traceable and applicable in practice.”
The company provides support, among other things, with the statistical evaluation of biological and medical data, the analysis of omics data, the modelling of biological systems and processes, and the development of databases and web-based applications. Clear visualisation of results and the preparation of evaluations for scientific or regulatory purposes are also part of the service portfolio.
BioControl Jena works as an interdisciplinary team with short decision-making paths and transparent project processes. Its particular strength lies in combining different perspectives: scientific questions, clinical requirements, technical constraints and regulatory specifications are translated into joint data concepts and models.
“Thirty years of BioControl Jena stand for continuous collaboration with research institutions, companies and other partners,” says Dominik Driesch. “Our goal remains to make better use of the potential of data, experiments and biological systems – for better decisions and more efficient processes in the life sciences.”
