How to reach Jena

By Car

Two major German motorways (A4 and A9) lead to Jena.

From the north (Scandinavia, Hamburg, Berlin, Leipzig) you can take the A9 motorway to Eisenberg exit and then the B7 federal road to Jena.

From the south (Southern Europe, Munich, Nuremberg) take the same motorway in opposite direction, change to motorway A4 at Hermsdorfer Kreuz direction Frankfurt and use exit Jena Lobeda.

From Eastern Europe you can take the A4 motorway from Dresden to Jena, use exit Jena Lobeda.

From the west (Western Europe, Frankfurt/Main, Cologne) you can also take the A4 motorway to Jena, use exit Göschwitz.

Alternatively, if you are coming from the north (Scandinavia, Hamburg) you can take the A7 via Hannover and Kassel to Kirchheimer Dreieck intersection and change there to the A4 direction Dresden, use exit Göschwitz.

By Rail

Jena Paradies the city's major railway station with direct Intercity services from and to Berlin, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Munich. Intercity trains on this route call at Jena every two hours during the day.

From eastern or western parts of the country you can use Intercity trains between Frankfurt/Main and Dresden which call at Erfurt or Weimar. From Erfurt or Weimar there are frequent connecting services to Jena Westbahnhof.

International rail links from the western part of Europe often call at Frankfurt/Main; from the southern part of Europe there are good connections to Munich. From eastern Europe you will probably arrive at Berlin, Dresden or Nuremberg. Berlin has also good connections from and to Scandinavia.

By Air

There are several international airports in Germany with good connections to and from Jena.

The most important one is Frankfurt/Main International Airport. By rail it takes about 3.5 hours to get to Jena (please see railway information above).

There are also good rail connections from and to the international airports of Leipzig and Munich (again, please refer to the railway information above).

From Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport you can take one of the direct Interregio trains from the airport to Weimar and change there for Jena Westbahnhof.

Jena's Public Transport System

Coming by train from the north or the south you will probably arrive at the city's major railway station Jena Paradies. From the tram stop Am Paradiesbahnhof just outside the station, take Trams No. 1 or 31 (direction Winzerla/Lobeda-Ost). Get off at tram stop Ringwiese. Walk up Hermann-Löns-Strasse and Wildenbruchstrasse.

Coming by train from the east or the west you will probably arrive at Jena Westbahnhof. From the bus stop Westbahnhofstrasse (about 350 metres away) take Buses No. 10, 13 or 40 (direction Burgau/Göschwitz). Get off at bus stop Beutenberg.Walk up Wildenbruchstrasse.
